Article on the effectiveness of NBS at the Isar River

Published 28.09.2020 , last updated 17.09.2023

A multi-criteria comprehensive tool has been applied to the retrospective concept case at the Isar River Basin in Germany to evaluate the strength of different NBS design scenarios from technical, environmental, and socio-economic perspectives.

The open access journal, Environmental Sciences Proceedings, has published an article based on the paper accepted for the 4th EWaS International Conference: Valuing the Water, Carbon, Ecological Footprints of Human Activities, scheduled to be held on the Corfù Island (Greece) in June 2020. Due to Covid-19 emergency, it was converted into an online meeting from 24 to 27 June 2020.

The oral presentation, scheduled on June 24, was part of the “Water Works Sustainability: Challenges and Innovative Approaches” Special Session, sparking a constructive debate among the attendees and providing fruitful discussing points.

The article highlights the preliminary application of the assessment framework tool to the Isar River (Germany) concept case. It also provides an ex-post analysis of the flood risk management plan, comparing the performances of the implemented NBS project scenario against a potential grey solution. The article represents multi-disciplinary collaboration between two PHUSICOS partners: the University of Naples Federico II (UNINA), and the Technische Universität München (TUM).
